Once upon a Broken Heart—Review

Updated: Feb 21

Once upon a Broken Heart

(Once Upon A Broken Heart #1)

Stephany Garber

The story follows Evangeline, after losing both her parents she fears that her boyfriend has been cursed into marrying her step-sister. Convinced of her delusion, Evangeline seeks out the Prince of Hearts—also known as Jacks to those who don’t like him. Unaware of the consequences, Evangeline makes a deal with the indifferent fate. When the stone hits the fan, Evangeline makes a sacrifice in hopes to be saved by someone. Anyone. Back to reality Evangeline can now go back to living as usual, as she tries to avoid the cold hearted prince. However, nothing is as it was, hoping for a fresh start and looking to make everything up to her step-sister, Evangeline travels to the Magnificent North with her step-sister at the request of the queen. Having to face off Jacks, Evangeline must now repay what she owes…three kisses.

The journey of Evangeline and Jacks throughout the North was amazing and thrilling, with so many secrets, prophecy, and foes. The banter between Jack and Evangeline is everything! Both characters are strong leads and carry the story in some way. Every supporting characters are essential to the story and brings even more to the table.

I could barely put down the book and stayed up later than usual just to finish it. I absolutely loved it when Jacks would refer to Evangeline as Little fox. As much as Evangeline’s thoughts and actions annoyed me at times, I realized I was only so irritated because I could see myself in her position and making those kinds of mistakes.

I still have many questions about the story that remain unanswered, however the second book “The Ballad of Never After” will be out on September 13th and I cannot wait!!!

I 100% recommend this book to all those looking for a sizzling romance-action packed book with relevant supporting characters, an enemies-to-lovers romance and main characters that make you slap your forehead, and laugh out loud in the middle of the night.

Heroes don't get happy endings. They give them to other people.
The fates weren't dangerous because they were evil; the fates were dangerous because they couldn't tell the difference between evil and good.
If you think I'm jealous because someone else got to stab you, then you're right.
you have to have a working heart for it to break.
Regret was the worst. Regret was sour and bitter, and it tasted so close to the truth she had to fight sinking into it.
After I got mauled by the wolf, my scars weren't sexy scars-" "He just said sexy scars," Jacks drawled. "Are you really listening to this?
She wasn't making love choices, she was making compromising choices because she wanted love. Luc wasn't her weakness- love was. Not even just love but the idea of it.
She didn't make being alone seem lonely as Evangeline had always feared. She made it seem like an adventure, as if every moment were the start of a story with endless possibilities.
“I'm curious about a lot of things. I'm curious about you, but I don't want you to bite me!" The corner of Jacks's mouth twitched. "I've already done that, Little Fox.”
